Blue Hour Rush
Leading a week long photo tour of England in spring of 2017 was a real pleasure for me, the weather played along and helped deliver a perfect workshop for all involved. As a part of that workshop we had a long evening session around London, beginning with sunset at Tower Bridge. The sunset shoot went very well and we were in the process of setting up for the blue hour shots when I heard a siren approaching.
With no filter attached, but wanting to grab some light streaks form the emergency vehicle lights, I instinctively pushed the aperture to f/16 and fired off a 10 second exposure. It wasn't a long enough shutter speed for the ambulance to cross the bridge entirely, but as the shutter closed I held on to my remote trigger and fired off another 10 second shot which caught the remaining traverse. It was then just a very simple matter of merging the two images in post processing to get the finished result.
This is one of many favourite shots from the week, it's a very simple image of an iconic structure in good light and with the added bonus of perfectly complementary light streaks across the bridge.
