California Redwoods
This was my third visit to the great redwood forests of northern California and I was looking to make something a little different this time around. The scale and majesty of these incredible towering trees is something that everyone should experience at least once but they can be challenging to photograph without including people or vehicles or other known objects for scale.
As photographers we sometimes forget to look up, but the giant redwoods force you to do just that which helps you realise that there is a great image to be made right there above you. You will still need to put thought into your composition, use of odd numbers, where are the leading lines going, symmetry or offset, the contrast of light and dark etc. But if you find that sweet spot you can make some really interesting images that, although simple, will hold the gaze, and any image that holds your gaze for more than a moment is a good image.
