Three Isle Lake
I remember this day so well, a 26 km hike with almost 3000 metres of ascent, when I had actually set to to make a 14 km hike with less than 300 metres of ascent, that will certainly stick in the memory banks. I started out at the northernmost car park beside upper kananaskis lake for a spring hike to a waterfall about 7 km along the lakeshore. I had been to the falls before and the day was just a leg stretcher, a nice wander on easy going to a pretty waterfall.
Once I had reached the falls and looked around, had a snack and sat a while, I felt like I hadn't done much so decided to go a little further. I walked on easy going for another 3 kms or so to a campground and suddenly realised I was only another 3 km or so from Three Isle Lake. I knew there was a lot of ascent to reach it but decided to go anyway. I had a couple of snack bars with me and plenty of water so went for it. On reaching the lake I am so glad I made that decision, it was absolutely stunning.
After making some shots I started back along the same route I had taken to reach the lake. It felt like the longest walk of my life, I'm not sure why but it was a killer. I think the fact that it was early season and I'd not done much hiking yet, combined with little to no food for the 7 hour journey left me absolutely drained for the last 5 km along the upper lake shore.
When I look at this image I still feel it was worth every single step of that long route home, it really has become a canadian favourite.
