I have thought of making a sunset shot at Castle Mountain in Banff National Park, for about 7 years now but for some reason never got around to it. With good snowfall in Kananaskis and clear skies there was little promise there today so my thoughts returned to Castle Mountain. I knew nothing about parking, access or potential of the location, but realised that I would never know if I didn't go out there and see for myself.
So almost 2 hours later I find the location, the parking and the access point and I'm scouring the shore for a foreground. I have to say almost everything was right for a great sunset shoot but the foreground really was letting me down, just a huge dark area with little to offer today. The low water on the river was heavily rippled by the cobblestones just below the surface which killed the reflection potential.
Ultimately I did find a line of dry rocks beside a reflecting pool and I learned a lot about the location. I'll be back here when the ice is present (or some good snow at least). This will brighten the foreground and add some interest I think. Watch this space.
